Kelly Sturgiss grew up on the traditional lands of the Walbanga people, Yuin Nation, where her family has lived since her ancestor’s convict emancipation. After studying music and fine arts, where she combined sound and visual arts, Kelly returned to her community to raise her child. Over the past 20 years, she has established an artist-run exhibition space and taught music both privately and through community workshops.
As the founder and principal teacher at Sturkella Music, Kelly has developed an effective teaching methodology that caters to the individual needs of her students. She blends various learning approaches, encouraging students to not only master technical skills but also to feel and express music through improvisation, composition, and performance. A multi-instrumentalist with a broad musical background, Kelly is adept at guiding students from beginner to advanced levels, fostering both technical proficiency and creative expression.
Kelly brings her deep passion for music education to this residency, alongside a commitment to making music accessible to all. Her workshops and programs are designed to inspire students to discover their own musical potential while emphasizing personal wellbeing and emotional connection to music. Rooted in the belief that music is a powerful tool for personal and cultural expression, Kelly’s approach will be instrumental in guiding the musical journey of participants at the residency in Fitzroy Crossing.
